Student Enrichment activities directed toward individuals attending Central Bucks High School-West

Dr. Hughes in cooperation with Mark Hayden, the Science Department Coordinator of Central Bucks High School-West, is partaking in enrichment activities for high-school students interested in pursuing careers in engineering.

Spring 2012: Dr. Hughes and Ph.D. candidate Kyle Gilroy are mentoring a science fair project for Central Bucks High School-West student Matthew Ernst. This spring Matt has worked in Temple Laboratories where has produced substrate-based gold nanowires using colloidal chemistry.

Summer 2011: Dr. Hughes facilitated a 40 hour shadowing opportunity for Matthew Ernst. Over the course of two-months this high school senior participated in laboratory activities which included AFM, SEM and TEM sessions, nanoparticle growths using thermal dewetting, pulsed laser deposition and colloidal routes, attended group meetings and accompanied group members as they visited both the Penn Regional Nanotechnology Facility and the laboratory of Dr. Ying Sun (Drexel University).
