The College of Engineering is pleased to announce a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering (BSBE). Over the past several years, the College has been developing and strengthening its Bioengineering presence. The Department of Bioengineering was formed in 2008 and the Board approved the Master of Science in Bioengineering in 2010.

The new Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering program seeks to create a bioengineer that will be able to integrate engineering science, rigorous mathematical tools and a quantitative approach to the life sciences and apply this spectrum of knowledge in an interdisciplinary fashion to provide solutions to basic and applied biological and medical problems.

The 124-credit program includes the accreditation-required number of credits in math, science and engineering. After completing the first two years of the common engineering curriculum, students in the Bioengineering program will take an integrated set of courses aimed at providing a thorough introduction to the complex and interdisciplinary field of Bioengineering including courses in specific areas such as structure and function of biomaterials, fundamentals of bioelectricity, principles of biomechanics, bioheat and mass transfer, tissue and regenerative engineering and neuroengineering. Hands-on engineering experience will be gained through intense laboratory coursework and by solving real-life biomedical problems.

The Dean of the College of Engineering endorses this proposal and confirms that it has gone through the necessary review processes as outlined by the policies of the College. The Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies endorses this proposal.

The Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering will be offered beginning Fall 2013.
