I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer and are ready to have a great year at the College of Engineering. For some of you, this will be your first semester and for others, one of your last. No matter where you are in this journey, I want to commend you for choosing a career field that is full of exciting opportunities and challenges. In a competitive job market, an engineering degree will give you the solid foundation you need to succeed in an increasingly technologically focused world. However, in order to be successful, it is important not only to focus on the technical side of your education, but non-technical skills such as communication and team building. These skills can determine your success in an organization and are one of many important qualities sought after by employers in all areas. A Co-op can help you get the experience you need to become more employable, as well as making valuable professional contacts through networking. it’s a win-win situation. I encourage you to stop by my office on the 3rd floor and find out about how you can get involved.A Cooperative Education (Co-op) is an optional program available at the College of Engineering where you have the opportunity to gain professional work experience before graduation. It is designed to give you the chance to apply the knowledge learned in the classroom to real life problems. You will be exposed to the latest technology and new ideas at a worksite helping you understand your field of work more extensively. During the Co-op, you will make valuable connections with professionals in your field. A cooperative education can enhance and strengthen you academically, professionally and personally.Research indicates that employers value Co-op experience in students. Co-ops can often lead to a full time employment offer upon graduation and/or a higher starting salary. Here’s what some of our Co-op employers have to say about the program.Co-op Employers Speak Out
“The Temple Co-op experience has given us an opportunity to embrace fresh ideas from young individuals. The students are able to get hands on approach to the real world allowing them to apply their experience back in their classrooms. They add an extra sense of fresh air so to speak among our engineers and encourage everyone to think outside the box. As a Temple University Alumnus, it has given me great pleasure and confidence to see the Temple Engineering Co-op program grow successfully and I look forward to meeting more students from the program.”
Arun Sasikumar, Vice president
Prüftechnik Service, Inc.
“The Temple Engineering Co-op program has been a great benefit to us. The students are quick to learn and have completed meaningful projects. It’s great to have an ‘extra’ employee to help us out. The program also gives us the chance to observe the student’s performance over several assignments to determine if there is a potential match for a long-term employment.”
Diane Redilla, Manager
Verizon
“We have seen the Temple Co-op program brings in enthusiastic students who are willing to learn and do what it takes to contribute to a growing company. It is a perfect opportunity for both the student and the company to see if there is a fit with skill set, work ethics and overall compatibility.”
Wayne Klein, V.P. Engineering
Apogee Labs
“Temple’s Co-op program gives students the opportunity to work within their chosen field while giving us the opportunity to work with potential employee candidates. It’s an equally successful partnership.”
Bruce E. Littleton, P.E., P.T.O.E
Orth-Rodgers & Associates, Inc.
“The longer time frame of the Co-op program is much more appealing to us for working with engineering students.”
Rick Parisi, P.E.
McMahon Associates, Inc
“As one of the leading engineering firms in the Delaware Valley, Pennoni Associates, Inc, Inspection and Testing Division relies on high-quality Co-op students to assist us with testing of construction materials at various project sites in the area. We have had a very positive experience with the candidates referred to us by Temple University’s Recruitment and Co-op program for employment with us.
